How secluded can contemporaneity be? Is every art aimed at an inherent center? Are sound waves soft boundaries? Pack a bag, a sky and a bonfire log to join six exceptional musicians on their expedition to the rough and mellow edges of electronic sound. Periferiya is a Russian-swiss collaboration between Boris Shershenkov (St. Petersburg), Kurt Liedwart and Mikhail Myasoedov (Moscow), Thomas Korber (Zürich), Christian Kobi (Berne) and Christian Müller (Biel) which took place in the remote Vallée de Joux, on the border between Switzerland and France. An encounter of six related yet distinctly different approaches to music, sharing mutual roots in their appreciation for the first generation’s electronic music in Russia and Switzerland. Curated by Christian Müller, the project’s aim was to create querulent and contrasting resonances where the nothing meets the something, where the murmurs range the woods. Recorded during the Hors Normes Festival 2019, Periferiya is an ever playful and surprising sextet that takes you with a minimalistic approach through acoustic layers, through crisp sediments of electronic experiments, microsounds, improv and pop ambient, through full color sound landscapes at last.
PERIFERIYA
Is experimental music a peripheral phenomenon? How remote can contemporaneity be? Is every art aimed at an inherent center? Are sound waves soft boundaries? Can encounters gather power if they happen outside of borders?
The project Periferiya invited six electronic and electroacoustic musicians, three from Russia and three from Switzerland, all of them quite characteristic heads in their field of music, to meet and to create. Meet in La Vallée de Joux, a remote Jura valley close to the French Border. Create conceptual pieces and instant composing scores collaboratively, which were performed during the Hors Normes festival 2019.
The musicians of Periferiya are:
— Kurt Liedwart
— Boris Schershenkov
— Mikhail Myasoedov
— Tomas Korber
— Christian Kobi
— Christian Müller
Periferiya features a variety of electro-acoustic approaches from very basic settings to elaborate systems with complex electronic instruments. The invited musicians are established improvisors of the younger generation, well-known for their particular ways to play, to think and unthink music. Periferiya’s working mode is a collaborative development of conceptual pieces and scores, embracing the musicians’ characteristics and respective roots.
The good thing about the periphery is: You don’t have to be somewhere else, because there is nothing else. Periferiya is a unique opportunity to play and discuss being highly focused, explore and research together in between cultures, influences and scenes – exchange and encounters becoming a center on their own.
Periferiya has a first album released on Mikroton in 2021, one of the key labels for experimental, electronic music in Russia.
